Summer Trail Update

Summer’s usually a quiet time around Houston, but not for GHORBA. We’ve got several new projects in the works and although we’d like to just kick back and relax while its hot, we’re hard at work to exploit the new opportunities we’ve been working on. Two projects in particular are in full swing:

Spring Creek Greenway Project

This project is a joint venture between Harris and Montgomery Counties and The Woodlands Development Company. We recognized that there are tremendous opportunities for new trails along this project and the time is right to start working with the project directors, particularly as The Woodlands announced their preliminary plans for Creekside Park. Ultimately, the SCGP will be a greenway running from Tomball to Kingwood and up the lower 7 miles of Cypress Creek – about 15,000 acres of land in total, with several areas suitable for some cool trails.

GHORBA recognized that the workload for advocacy was becoming too great and so we have developed a new system where, instead of appointing an individual as a Trail Steward, we’re using an entire club – Woodlands Cycling Club (WCC). Back in May, GHORBA arranged a kick-off meeting with key players on the Spring Creek Greenway Project (SCGP), members of WCC, GHORBA and the Texas Trail Docs to introduce the project to the resources we cyclists have and to introduce the WCC as our advocacy group.

Jim Davis of WCC will be the leader of the WCC group. Jim met with the project co-ordinator Robert Collins last week, and they have arranged for a previously planned Trail Building Clinic to take place at Montgomery County Preserve on July 22 & 23. The Trail Docs will give the clinic, as they’ve done many times before. At the clinic, a short demonstration trail will be built. Jim Davis will be organizing the attendees, and he plans to invite a number of local government, park and envrionmental groups to attend, along with some cyclists. Using this clinic, we hope that Jim and the Trail Docs will be able to convince the SCGP to let us proceed with new trails along Spring Creek.

This will be a work in progress for several years to come, but the great thing is that we are in the right place at the right time and Jim and WCC are already off to a flying start!

Carl Barton Jr. Park, Conroe

The Trail Docs have marked the first 3 mile section of trail and we have arranged a date for the Trail Building Clinic, when construction of this new trail will begin.

So, mark your calendar for 12 & 13 August and attend the clinic and help us get this trail off to a flying start. We will invite some park and other non-cyclist groups to attend the clinic, but for this one, we need a good group of cyclists to fill up the clinic and help get the job done. Gary Rogers, who first came up with the idea for this trail, will be the Trail Steward.

If you wish to attend either clinic, please contact our VP of Trails, Kevin Highfield, and he’ll point you in the right direction.

We have several other projects in the pipeline, which are pretty exciting, so watch this space for more information. And, if you’re not already a member of GHORBA, please join us. The links for membership are at the top of the website.

Happy Trails!

Vice President of Trails
