National Trails Day - June 2, 2007 - There's a Trail for You to Work On!

National Trails Day is promoted by the American Hiking Society. They may be hikers, but they’ve done an outstanding job in promoting trails which we cyclists can also use, so we are proud to be a supporter of this event.

Here’s a list of trails around town where GHORBA members and friends are showing up to do the work and, in many cases, ride afterwards:

Jack Brooks Park – 10 AM at the Trailhead

The regular crew at Jack Brooks, led by Steve Booker, a GHORBA board member, will be having a work party. Steve and his crew have made JB one of the premier mountain bike destinations in our area and they sure would appreciate your help. They will work on the floating bridge

Lunch and drinks will be provided by GHORBA. Drop Booker a note to let him know you’re coming.

Park on the south side of the park complex. We will work through lunchtime.

Double Lake Recreation Area – 9 AM at the Lodge

We finally got some new trail approved for construction at Double Lake, and what better day to cut it than National Trails Day? The trail is completely marked and ready for willing hands to cut the trail. GHORBA will provide lunch, drinks and tools.

Just bring yourself, some gloves, and a willingness to get dirty. We will work through lunchtime and as late as you can stay. No doubt there’ll be a ride afterwards, so bring your bike and your helmet. Tell the park that you’re working on the trails and they should let you in free. The password is “GHORBA NTD”

Timberlane Trails on Cypress Creek (Humble), 8 AM

Join REI and Harris County Precinct 4 working on the new trail system which will become an integral part of the Cypress Creek Greenway.

Food and refreshments will be provided by Harris County Precinct 4. Look for GHORBA trail steward Jeff Dougherty and introduce yourself! Jeff will also be joined by some of the Cypresswood Trails crew.

This trail system is on a fast track under the expert guidance of Talon Trails and there are 3 miles of trail completed and lots more in the pipeline.

You must register with REI for this event. Please read REI’s details of the event, to register, know what to bring and where to go.

Lake Houston Park – 8 AM to Noon

We are supporting the Park People who are participating in the “Trail of Trash” events, under the sponsorship of ExxonMobil & Shell.

Lake Houston Park has recently been acquired by the City of Houston from Texas Parks and Wildlife, and COH has some great plans for this 4,800 acre park – plans which will include lots of cool trails.

Look for trail steward Chad Karger and his crew and introduce yourself.

Ride @ Stephen F. Austin Park Jun 2 or 3

We want to get more people out to Stephen F. Austin Park – its not supposed to be a secret that this beautiful park has miles of really great singletrack. Scott King will be leading the ride.

Start time is 9 AM from the parking lot past the picnic pavillion. There’s a $5-6 fee per car entering the park.

Scott will post on the GHORBA Forum to note if the ride needs to be cancelled due to weather.

Remember, ride wherever the trails are dry.

Don’t forget this Saturday is also the monthly REI/GHORBA Terry Hershey Park Cleanup Saturday May 26, 10 AM. We will furnish trash bags, water and snacks. We recommend you bring gloves, sunblock and insect repellent. If the trails will be dry, we’ll take a ride afterwards! Directions to Dairy Ashford Parking Lot

  1. If you reside in West Houston, REI Houston will also be having a Tree Planting Service Project. Please contact me at 713.353.2582 if you are interested in particiapting in this volunteer opportunity.
Last year our theme was Hiking, Cycling and Planting, and trees were provided by Harris County Precinct 3. Due to our positive recent collaborations, I would like to invite GHORBA members, family, and friends to participate in this event. Last year we had REI, American Hiking Society, Harris County Precinct 3 (Parks), Memorial Athletic Club, Bike World and Fitness, The Energy Corridor District, Houston Happy Hikers, and West Houston Medical Center in attendance. A few of the partners of last year may change, but it will pretty much consist of the same or similar groups. The location has changed for our tree planting this year to Highway 6 & Buffalo Bayou, adjacent to Barker Reservoir. The main event will be held at Terry Hershey Park, on Memorial, just west of Elderidge. It is about a two mile hike/bike from our tree planting site.
