Timber Lane Trails at Cypress Creek

Cypress Creek Project Google Earth KMZ file with USGS Topo Overlay

GHORBA put Timber Lane MUD in touch with Talon Trails (now employing the former Texas Trail Docs, Ryan and Susan) who will design and help build the trail system. Below is a summary of the project – you will see a pretty rapid time-line. Timber Lane MUD have been working on this for over 2 years, but it was recently brought to my attention by Jim Robertson, chair of the Cypress Creek Greenway Project.

This will become an important connecting link in the greenway project and get this: the lower reaches will connect with the Spring Creek Project (which runs up the lower 5 miles of Cypress Creek) and the upper reaches combine with the area around I-45 where an exploratory ride was made last summer. There’s not too much more to connect Cypresswood Trail to the I-45 area and voila! we’ll have one long trail connected to Spring Creek!

Bud Gessel, the project director, has requested assistance from other like minded groups, so I talked with him

GHORBA wants to appoint a volunteer Trail Steward to act as the liaison between the project and the wider membership to help summon volunteers and technical resources when required.

Preferably, you should live in or near the Timber Lane area. The key requirement is a willingness to help and keep in contact with people. GHORBA would provide all the necessary technical backup. I know that several people from this area are getting this info and we want to hear from you – so please drop me a line.

Vice President of Trails, GHORBA

  1. I just uploaded a new KMZ file with a USGS 1:24000 Topographic Map overlay. I got it at the fantastic site gpsvisualizer.com

  2. Good news travels fast. We already have a volunteer to be our trail steward / coordinator – Jeff Houghton, who lives nearby the Timber Lane sub-division and comes to us through the Cypresswood Trail Group. There is no limit on anyone else that wants to help though. Jeff will be our point of contact with the project so that GHORBA (and that means YOU!) can support and assist.

  4. My name is Jeff Dougherty and I have volunteered to be the trail steward for the soon-to-come Timber Lane Trail.

Here is the update: Surveying is currently taking place (as we speak) on a 70 acre section of land, for phase I of a three-phase project that will eventually comprise 4 to 5 miles of trails situated north of Cypress Creek and extending from Treshwig Rd. to Hardy Rd. Not all of the eventual 4 to 5 miles of trails will be mountain bike specific; however, phase I will be designated as “extreme” off road trails. Of course “extreme” is a subjective word, but this is the designation the Timber Lane Utilities District has given this section and let’s hope for the best. Bud Gessel of the Timber Lane Utilities district was kind enough to fill me in on the details of what is being planned. I have uploaded a map on the “files” section of the Cypresswood Trail Group, which indicates where the trails will eventually be located. If you refer to the map, the middle section with the narrow orange lines is what is being surveyed now and the good news is that this is the section that will be designated for mountain biking. The wider orange sections, heading east and west on the map are going to be more “multi-use” trails, some of which will be ADA or partially ADA approved walking/hiking type trails.

I will do my best to keep the Yahoo group informed as to the progress of this trail, possible work parties, etc. But for now what is known is that surveying has begun and trail building should commence soon by Talon Trails.
