Houston Parks Master Plan Public Comments Period Ends Soon!

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department public comment period on the Parks Master Plan is ending soon. The public forums enable Houston residents to vthoice their perceptions of parks and recreation and their priorities relating to parks, services, indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and open spaces.

You are not restricted from attending a meeting for your district only. Even if you can’t attend any of the meetings, send your comments (tips below) to parksmasterplan@cityofhouston.net

Ten meetings are scheduled between April 23 (District C with City Council Member Anne Clutterbuck at Marian Community Center, 11101 South Gessner) and May 17, 2007.

The city wants your input! See the Master Plan Update for the meeting schedule.

Please try to attend a meeting so that our elected representatives clearly hear that we need more trails to ride on.

Don’t think the city will listen? Tell them that the New York City Parks department has worked with their local mountain bike organizations to build mountain bike trails in Manhattan

If you do attend a meeting, and we hope you do, you will be an ambassador for all of us – so behave!!

Here are some suggested guidelines on how to speak up:

  • Tell them you are an off-road cyclist and you want to see more natural surface (singletrack) trails in Houston Parks.
  • Remind them that Memorial Park bike trails (which are multi-use) suffer from over-use and the answer to relieving the congestion is more trails in other city parks
  • Tell them you are a supporter of GHORBA, who muster the resources necessary to build and maintain trails.
  • Remind them that the vast majority of trails we build and maintain are MULTI-USE, non-motorized, singletrack, natural surface and sustainable.
  • Tell them bicycles-only trails such as dirt jumping or trails with Technical Trail Feature (TTFs) offer a great diversion for youth away from drugs and crime.

Please feel free to contact our Vice President of Trails if you want to help.

Meetings like these are often poorly attended so your voice will have the effect of many.
