Background

Welcome to New Revolution Cycles and GHORBA’s Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival and the Nation’s first Lyme Ryde in an effort to raise awareness of Lyme and associated diseases in Texas and the nation. As is true for any mountain bike festival, there will be plenty of beer, bikes and bozos.

The 2007 NRC Fat Tire Festival & Lyme Ryde will take place on November 3rd with activities continuing throughout the day and night. This first event promises to be a rewarding time with fun events both on and off a bike for adults and kids. We decided to combine the Lyme Ryde with a Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival since we were long overdue and this past years summer storms made it difficult to ride all over the state. Rocky Hill Ranch makes a great location for camping and riding, and is also central to 3 major Texas cities (San Antonio, Austin, & Houston).

Come on out and join us for some of our activities, to ride, relax or enjoy some music and beer! All proceeds generated by GHORBA will be donated to Texas Lyme Disease Association & Stand Up for Lyme to promote education throughout the state. GHORBA is a 501.3c non-profit Trail Advocacy group (among other things).

The ride and festivities takes place at the beautiful Rocky Hill Ranch, near Smithville, TX (<—Click for map and directions). We will have over $1000 in prizes. There will also be a FSA XC300 wheelset raffle – MSRP $600 for $3 per ticket.
Blackburn System X6 dual headlights – MSRP $250 for $2 per ticket.

Why Lyme

Lyme and it’s associated diseases is known as the Great Imitator because it mimics so many other diseases such as ALS, MS, RA, CFS and many others. Unfortunately due to faulty information within our state (and Nation), many doctors do not believe Lyme to be endemic to Texas. As heard so often, most patients get the runaround for years without ever being properly diagnosed. Even if they are diagnosed, the information that is available leads most doctors to believe it is very easily curable with a single round of antibiotics. Proper diagnosis at the onset is the best hope for an easy cure. For more information see: TLDA – Texas Lyme Disease Association, ILADS – International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society or LDA – Lyme Disease Association.

  1. This was a fun and well organized event. The weather was perfect and a good time was had by all. I spoke to several people who were very appreciative of the Beginner Skills Clinic and Bike Maintenace Class (hosted by James Webb of New Revolution Cycles) in particular. I wish I could have stayed later to participate in the night ride, bottomless pints of New Belgium, etc, but maybe next year.

I heard (after I left) that one of the high points was a new rider who had never attended ANY other bike event, and only owned a vintage road bike, won the raffle for the new mountain bike. That’s great. I hope to see him on the trails or at a race soon. The same individual was also lucky enough to have his old road bike selected as the demo unit used in the Maintenance Class, so he got it washed and professionally tuned while he watched and learned. Lucky him. :-)

The Lyme Ryde was a blast that included many tests of bike handling skills as well as other random events. If you didn’t participate, you should have.

I know that MANY bicycling events occur in Texas in the fall and GHORBA was battling many other events for participants, but the attendance was good, and should be higher next year when the word gets out about it’s success. Combining the Lyme Ryde in with the Fat Tire Fest was a good decision.

Count me in for next year!

  2. Just wanted to thank GHORBA for putting on such a fun event. I’ll be looking forward to doing it again next year. I never thought camping eight miles from my house would be so much fun!

The Lumberjack Challenge course was very cool, and conviently located near the New Belgium kegs. Coincidence? I don’t think so. ;-)

My favorite event of the day was the bicycle frisbee. That really stretched my skills. Learning to pick up a frisbee from atop a 21” MTB frame was very gratifying. Brian, you rule . . . but . . . our team won!

I hope GHORBA might consider hosting a Spring Fest to compliment the Fall Fat Tire Fest. hint hint

Thanks again to everyone involved with the weekend, the night ride was fun, my GF and her son both won prizes in the Lyme Ride and learned much in the Skills clinic.

    Kudos to everyone involved!

  3. Great event, definitely want to see another event by you guys, keep up the good work. Be sure to share as many photos and videos as soon as possible!
