Cyclocross Training and Races for Mountain Bikers
Cyclocross Training
The GCCA – Gulf Coast Cycling Association is holding a free cross clinic Wednesday night, December 6th, at Spotts Park for anyone wanting learn more about the techniques. The crossers think mountain bike people would do real well at cross.
Contact: George Hammerlein 713-503-1377 for exact time and meeting point. This will be after work but the park does have lights.
Two cross races this weekend
For those selfish miscreants who seek only a good time and will not be working on Saturday (see previous article about two GHORBA work parties) there is an interesting race on Saturday. The TXBRA Cyclocross season is underway, with 2 events in Houston next weekend. On Saturday is the GCCA event at Eleanor Tinsley Park.
An interesting feature of this event is a mountain bike category that starts at 10:40 AM.
Apparently the MTB race is open for all ages and categories, the only restriction is that your bike must not have barends. I think the organizers will decide if there’s any question about what constitutes a “mountain bike”. This should be interesting, since a few people (myself included) already race MTB’s at cyclocross (CX) events, and the CX concept really lends itself to the cross country (XC) discipline of mountain bike racing. There will be a course around the park of about 1.5 miles on grass and some hard-top, with a set of barriers at which riders have to dismount and carry bikes. The race will last 45 minutes and you simply have to complete as many laps as you can in that time. If you want to know what its like to go anaerobic for 45 minutes, now’s your chance to find out. All good fun.
There’s another CX race on Sunday There’s no special MTB start at that one, but you can still join the fun on your mountain bike, though its worth putting some skinny tires on to try and cut the rolling resistance. There are separate categories for abilities and age at both events in the main cyclocross events.
