Bike to Work Rides – West Side of Town

The west side of town has a very active group that has organized a series of commutes which will start between 5:30 and 6:30 and arrive at Terry Hershey Park between 6:45 and 7:15 am. There will be festivities, breakfast and prizes in the park. Each of the rides posted below will offer at least one experienced cycle commuter who will “buddy” with a group of riders to help you get used to commuting on your bike.

After the festivities at the park are over, there will be law enforcement officers to help riders heading north on Eldridge to safely get to work (i.e. Shell and ConocoPhillips).

If you plan to commute and are now to this, you should be sure to bring a change of clothing to work Thursday or carry a change in a backpack.

The “buddy” routes are posted here
Pages 8-11 of this document have some good tips and reminders.

Contact info for the various routes is here.

You should note that most of the routes are on off-road trails. Some of these are paved and some are not. You should look up a route that starts close to you in the first link and then, contact the route “buddy” in the second link to find out the details of the route.

We do want to emphasize that you should NOT try commuting if you are not sure you have a safe route all the way to work and back.

You should still at least have a good, blinking LED taillight as this makes you very visible to approaching cars. A headlight is needed for anyone starting before 6 am and/or covering more of the off-road, unpaved trails.
