THE HILL AT SIMS GREENWAYA Multiuse Project between Harris County Flood Control District and Houston Parks and Recreation DepartmentWHAT IS THE PROJECT?A 106-acre site with a storm-water detention basin and hills created from the soil dug from the basin. Hills will be made to look natural with tree and grass plantings. This site proposal has development with as much as 7-10 miles of trails for various uses. WHERE IS IT LOCATED? The site is located just west of Scott Street, across from Cloverland Park. When E. Orem Rd. is extended, Orem will be the south boundary. The site’s western boundary will meet Sims Bayou. WHEN WILL IT OPEN? Construction on the storm-water detention basin would begin in 2004 with completion expected in 2005. Upland trails will be added after the hills are built and re-vegetated. Trail use may begin as early as Spring, 2005. RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES With funding from Texas Parks and Wildlife Recreational Trail Program and volunteer labor from Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association, the Parks Department and Harris County Flood Control District will develop approximately a mile of ground level multi-use trail with a surface to allow walking, biking, stroller and wheelchair use. The multi-use trail will provide interconnection with the hike and bike trail system along Sims Bayou to be built by the Sims Bayou Federal Project. The project also proposed another 6-8 miles of mountain bike trails with various levels of challenge for beginners to experienced riders. The draft concept map shows only the multi-use trail. The bike trails will be added to the hills. Parking is proposed to be located off Orem Rd. PUBLIC COMMENT In February and March, HCFCD and PARD will be holding public meetings and/or attending other meetings in the community to discuss the project and seek comments.
