Quarterly Meeting, Sam Houston Trails Coalition
February 2 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am
The SHTC is having their quarterly meeting on Sat, Feb 2nd, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Gulf Coast Trades Center.
143 Forest Service Rd 233, New Waverly, TX 77358
GHORBA founded the SHTC, but in 2016 the Coalition eliminated all organizational memberships including GHORBA, the Lone Star Trail Hiking Club, and others. Cyclists have had little formal representation in Sam Houston National Forest from 2016-Present. Please attend to stand for cycling interests.
This is important. The SHTC has an objective in their bylaws to balance the needs and interests of all recreation groups. Since formation in 2010, they have applied for 3 motorized RTP grants (there were an additional 3 SHNF grants), 3 equestrian grants (1 more is required), 2 hiking grants, and 0 cycling grants. Following Hurricane Harvey, the SHTC did not apply for grants to rebuild damaged cycling trail that the Forest Service won’t allow volunteers to touch, requiring major capital investment. Due to insufficient resources, as all resources are tied to those other groups projects, the SHTC has denied volunteer requests to apply for Harvey repair grants. Consequently, a section of Double Lake remains closed. The Forest Service would not allow GHORBA to apply for those projects, stating maintenance and grants was the SHTC’s responsibility. GHORBA has requested meetings to work collaboratively towards fundraising and grants for cycling trails, but those requests have not been accepted. A collaborative solution, working in coalition together, is essential to ensure trail is not permanently closed.
