GHORBA Sprockids Helps Fight Child Obesity with Helms Elementary
GHORBA Sprockids partnered with Helms Elementary for the school’s first-annual Bike Rodeo. Students in grades 3-5 learned the ABCs of bike safety, and participated in activities such as a short, technical obstacle course, a mid-length obstacle course with a jump, and a road ride around the school campus.
Since many of the students did not have bikes to bring, and few had helmets of their own, GHORBA Sprockids loaned bikes and helmets to emphasize bike safety. In addition, the Sprockids Coordinator provided volunteer support and advice to school staff and volunteers on teaching bike skills to youth.
Helms Elementary is a dual-language, public magnet school in the Houston Heights. The Bike Rodeo is part of the school’s plan to get kids active and combat childhood obesity.
